How To Be An Empowered Woman? Interview with Marta Spirk (ep-160)

July 9th, 2020

Today on the podcast I'm chatting with Marta Spirk, from

Marta Spirk is a writer, podcaster and woman empowerment coach. Her focus is on helping selfless, overwhelmed women learn to put themselves first, stop people-pleasing and become their own support system. Through her podcast The Empowered Woman, her virtual self-improvement membership and workshops, she hopes to encourage and uplift women to step into their own power and realize they can HAVE IT ALL!

This episode was so fun and very quickly pivoted into a deep and important conversation for women.

We talked about feminism and some triggering pain points for women.

Highlights from today's interview

  • Marta's becoming an empowered woman story
  • The definition of empowerment and why it's not hating-men
  • The process of self-definition and taking responsibility for your own life
  • The 5 steps of self-empowerment for women
  • The importance of a community of women and having a support group for the integration of empowerment.

Diversity and Inclusivity Begin At Home (ep-158)

June 17th, 2020

Today on the podcast we’re continuing the conversation about diversity, inclusivity, privilege, social injustice, profiling, discrimination and fairness among all human beings.

I believe that we are all children of God and deserve basic human rights, feeling like we belong in society and the world, feeling safe and acknowledged for who we are without discrimination, or the need to protect ourselves and our children constantly from bias, prejudice, injustice.

As a woman, wife and mother I wouldn’t want to live in a world where my life force energy is spent in the wrong places – like fearing my children aren’t safe on the streets, or not trusting authorities to protect us or treat us differently just because of the colour of my skin.

In this episode, you’ll hear my conversation with Megan Stewart Hodge, the founder of Cultiver. She is an executive, public speaker and advocate for diversity and cultures of inclusion in the workplace.

Megan strives for whole-person success in her interwoven career and personal journey, prioritizing authenticity in life and as a leader in the insurance industry. Megan has cultivated her expertise as a leader throughout her career with a strong focus on operational strategy, innovation, fostering talent and inclusive culture development and consummate client advisory.

Megan is the author of Voix, commencing in January 2020 in the glu, a monthly storytelling series highlighting the imperative of using our individual and collective voices to advance and empower women in all facets of our lives.

Megan believes it is critical to use our voices and our positions of leadership to drive meaningful change for a more inclusive industry and society.

Megan, like myself, is a wife and mother who believes in equal rights and strives to educate herself on big, scary and loaded topics and introducing them to our families in a palatable, digestible way.

Highlights from this episode:

  • Megan’s story and how she came to do this work
  • Definitions – diversity, inclusion, privilege, social injustice, profiling, discrimination, fairness. What does this mean and why does it matter?
  • The importance of having freedom for expressing yourself fully, authentically and feeling safe in the world
  • Why does this conversation matter for mothers?
  • Why does this have to start at home?
  • Tips and tools for having age-appropriate conversations about race at home with children (videos, books, documentaries, etc).
  • What are some examples of exhibiting inclusive and diverse behaviour at home and in the outside world?

This is an important conversation I recommend for women, especially if you’re raising children and your vision for them is living in a world that is fair for all human beings.

If you are, like me, a newbie to this topic, this conversation will help you to get started. Remember, social justice is a marathon, not a sprint, and both Megan and I believe this has got to start at home. Even if you feel like there’s nothing you can do to contribute to change, there’s a lot you can do at home. Listen to how Megan and I are doing it and join in with us.

Megan and I want to hear from you!

How are you educating yourself and your children about social injustice and what are some examples of the things you do at home? Comment below.

Menstrual Cycle Awareness, Wild Power & Feminine Feminism with Alexandra Pope and Sjanie Hugo Wurlitzer (ep-142)

January 30th, 2020

In this podcast episode, I'm sharing an interview I've done with Alexandra Pope & Sjanie Hugo Wurlitzer, co-founders of Red School, and co-authors of the iconic and hugely celebrated book from Hay House, Wild Power: discover the magic of the menstrual cycle and awaken the feminine path to power.

They are pioneering the newly emerging field of menstruality, creating a new lexicon and approach to women’s health and wellbeing; creativity and leadership; and spiritual life based on the power of our menstruality consciousness.

They bring over 45 years of experience and today they teach worldwide on the psycho-spiritual process of maturation that unfolds from menarche to menopause and beyond. They’re committed to training the menstruality leaders of the future.

Highlights from today’s episode:

* The story behind Wild Power work and Menstrual Cycle Awareness
* Their definition of wild power.
* Feminine feminism – Is it possible to do it all? How can women thrive in their relationships, motherhood, health, career.
* How can we create a win-win environment that works both for women and the workplace.
* What do we, women, lose when we don’t practice menstrual cycle awareness.
* How does MCA support our ability to cultivate energy
* Motherhood and benefits for our children to be away from us for a little while we menstruate.
* Why do we, women, feel the need to be held and feel safe and why do we need a man by our side.

The fun part of the interview was hearing them share what makes them feel confident, energized and sexy as women.

This is an incredibly important episode to listen to if you’re a woman looking to reclaim your sense of self-authority and power.

Enjoy listening!

Much love,

134. Stories That Heal The Soul - An Interview With Sarah Monares

November 28th, 2019

Show Notes:

I know your dirty little secret…

July 15th, 2019

Hey mama,

This weekend my 3-year-old drove us crazy.

She wanted to wear four layers of dresses one on top of the other.

This makes her feel beautiful.

What she doesn't understand is that it's too hot and wearing so many layers will make it worse.

She feels stuff but doesn't know yet how to express it.

So there was a lot of screaming and frantic behavior.

I was on the verge of losing my mind.

She was absolutely hysteric.

It was then that a lightbulb went off for me.

I remembered an article I've read a couple of weeks ago about women's health a hundred years ago and that helped me to calm down.

This will blow your mind!

Do you know the real meaning of the word 'hysteria'?

Ready for it?

In Latin, it's 'suffering in the uterus'.

You know what that means, right?

That being hysteric is a women's problem.

In other words, being born a woman is a curse.

You know this stigma right?

Men are not hysteric.

Men are perceived to be logical, rational, stable, linear, consistent.

Women, on the other hand, are hysteric.

It's almost like we are doomed to be anxious, illogical, inconsistent, and cray-cray just because we were born female.

I know your dirty little secret.

I know that you live your life on the cusp of losing control of:

your emotions,

your appetite,

your sexuality.

I know that sometimes, you're a hair-trigger away from exploding.

I know that deep inside you quietly believe that… well, you're too much.

I know that very often you feel like you’ve stepped inside the skin of a different person – that you are not being yourself.

I also know that you feel guilty and ashamed about it.

Very similarly to how my daughter felt.

I know that you're asking yourself:

'What's wrong with me?!'

"Why can't I get control of myself?'

I know because I'm a woman too.

I know how it feels to be a woman in a man's world.

To this day, women's health and pain are mostly not understood.

It's like trying to explain to my toddler that wearing four layers of puffy dresses one on top of the other is too hot.

She doesn't get it.

She doesn't care.

All she wants is to feel pretty.

This got me to think.

What if we're approaching women's health issues wrong?

* What if we are not giving women and girls the right tools to take care of themselves?

* What if instead of being logical and rational with my daughter I tried to think like her?

* What if I understood her emotionally instead of sending her the signal that she is hysteric?

So I did.

Wanna know what happened?

She burst in tears.

Gave me a huge hug.

And allowed me to take off the dresses.

She felt like mommy gets her.

What if we don't get ourselves?

What if our very own woman-ness is not yet understood?

What if this is the real reason for our struggles?

Struggles at home.

Struggles at work.

Struggles with relationships.

What would happen if you started understanding yourselves better?

How would this change your:

* health?

* work?

* parenting?

* marriage?

* sex life?

Think about this.

Why is it that to this day when a woman says how she feels, what she wants or what she needs, someone always knows better?

Her doctor, her mom/dad, her teacher, her husband...

What would happen if you've owned your woman-ness more?

How would your life look and feel like if you lived in alignment with your feminine current instead of against it?

What difference would this make to our daughters to think of themselves as 'normal' instead of 'hysteric'?

This is not wishful thinking.

This is possible.

This is the most sustainable way to live as a woman, wife, and mother.

I have been living in alignment with my feminine current for the past five years and I have personally coached dozens of women through the same process.

What's possible for you when you live in alignment with your feminine current?

* Life won't feel hard anymore.

* You won't be a victim of your body.

* You will be able to carve out time for yourself out of your busy day.

* You will have time for fun and play.

* You will feel more connected to your husband and kids.

Am I Depressed?

July 4th, 2019

Hey mama,

This week I got an email from a client and in it, she wrote:

'I get these spells of time and I question if I'm depressed.

Seemingly everything is OK.

I have a husband and a daughter. I'm not majorly ill, barely a sinus issue, I have a good life, I have an anniversary and a birthday this week, we're going out tonight and away for the weekend, but nothing really brings me joy right now.

I don't have to feel happiness 24/7 but I should feel something and I just feel numb right now.'

Are you familiar with this feeling?

I know I am.

More often than I would like I am flooded with low energy, feel very drained and tired.

I don't want to do anything - get ready, go out, be nice, smile or talk.

All the things that we have to do to 'show up' in our lives, right?

So what should you do?

How to shift this around?

This is what I cover in today's podcast episode (episode #110).

Hope this is helpful and if you resonated with my tips please share this episode with one mama in your life who needs to hear this right now.

It takes a village to raise a child AND a mama.

Do your part, show up for yourself and others.

Sending you much love and many blessings,

Hate Seeing Yourself In The Mirror? [ep-108]

June 19th, 2019

Hey mama,

Meet Linda.

A 42-year-old wife and mama to two beautiful girls.

An executive at a thriving start-up company.

She has everything she ever wanted. According to her parents she 'won' at life.

So why does she feel like crap?

She is confused.
She doesn't feel in control of her health.
She doesn't feel like she knows what she's doing.
She knows that she had neglected herself and her marriage.
She has zero interest in sex (her husband is pissed off about it).
She's afraid that she's screwing up her kids.
She's burnt out.
In other words, she is 'sucked dry'.

Linda also can't stand seeing herself in the mirror. She hates her body.
She wishes to be thinner and feels betrayed by her body.

One thing Linda is sure of is that she is DONE.

Done suffering.
Done struggling.
Done feeling stuck.
Done feeling like a victim.
Done complaining and bitching about how bad she feels.

Linda is ready and willing to listen.

She had heard me say that today's women suffer because of two factors that drag women down. Until she learns to set herself free from both of those things she will continue to suffer.

Wanna know what are those factors? Tune into today's podcast episode.

What Do You Wish For When You Blow Your Birthday Candles? [ep-105]

May 23rd, 2019

Hey love,

Today I have a challenge for you.

I want you to give yourself permission to dive deeper into yourself.

I want you to ask yourself, "what do I wish for when I blow out my birthday candles?"

In other words, what do I REALLY want?

Here are some examples from my clients (and some of my own):

"I wish I could eat whatever I could and still feel and look great"

"I wish I had more spaciousness and peace of mind in my life"

"I wish I didn't have to work so hard to lose the weight"

"I wish life was easier"

"I wish my husband desired me more"

"I want to have more fun"

"I wish I could dance again"

Now it's your turn. Go deep and don't hold back!

This is such an important piece when it comes to healing your relationship with your body, your health, your finances, your relationships with people, etc.

In order to truly heal yourself, you need to start with the truth and build up from there.

Choose yourself first, ALWAYS.

Because (and you already know this) you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Sending you much love & healing,

How Do You Mistreat Yourself? [ep-104]

May 16th, 2019

Hey love,

I hear from so many of you that you want to know more about me.

I love reading and whenever I pick up a new book the first thing I do is go straight to the acknowledgments portion because that's where I the 'real' person lives.

So I get it.

Today on the podcast I share more about myself, my journey and my health mission.

I talk about:

  • The various ways in which I see women mistreating themselves as women, wives, and mothers.
  • How my maternal lineage influenced me and why I didn't want my daughters to end up like them.
  • My motherhood journey and the healing I've experienced in that (still do).
  • My 'eat-pray-love' moment and what came out of that.
  • My mission as an embodiment coach for women.
  • My approach and how it looks like to work with me.

I hope you can find yourself in my story and know that you are not alone!

Whether you struggle with your relationships with people (parenting, marriage), your relationship with money (not clear what to do with your life/time, scarcity mindset, money wounds, etc), or with your relationship with your body and health, I want you to know that this can change.

All you need to do is decide.

Say "yes" to yourself.

Open your mind.

Slow down and listen.

Ask for help and wait.

It will happen.

Your feminine energy doesn't travel in the speed of Google. It needs time to simmer and cook before it manifests.

You got this!

If you're ready to say 'yes' to yourself (or willing to open your mind to it), head on over to my website and schedule a quick coffee chat with me.

I'm happy to hold space for you and help you create a plan of action in your way to change and heal from past conditioning and find the true you ;)

“What If My Husband Would Want Time Off Too? I Can’t Handle The Kids All By Myself!” [ep-102]

May 2nd, 2019

Hey mama,

Today on the show I am doing a follow up from last episode (ep-101) where I talked about how to sleep in with a clean conscious and without responsibilities for just one day.

So many of you resonated with this message and I'm so glad!

One message I've received really touched my heart, so I am responding to it today:

Here's what one mama wrote:

"Thank you for the podcast! I understand you now! I will have to work on myself to get the guts to do something like that, or at the very least have a half day to myself. Confession, I know if I would do it, my husband will want to as well. Not sure I can handle the kids on my own for a full day and overnight. This is so shameful to admit, I can't believe I am telling you this."

Today's show is my response to her.

Enjoy listening and let me know if you have any questions related to this topic. If there's enough interest, I might do a series of Q&A.

Sending you much love & healing,

How To Sleep In With A Clear Conscious And Without Having Responsibilities For A Day? [EP-101]

April 17th, 2019

Hey love,

Today on the show I am sharing a little back and forth messaging between my friend and I and my extended version of a reply to her.

So many of us, moms, feel like we are trapped and are literally unable to give to ourselves the things we need.

Even simple things like sleep, fun, time in solitude, time in nature, moving our bodies, etc.

The truth is that we are the only ones who stop ourselves.

Today's episode is an example of how I have done the same thing a couple of years ago and how I handle these things now.

Hopefully, this is helpful to you!

What are you struggling with? Send me a DM on IG ;)

Sending you much love & healing,

What Do You Desire? [EP-100]

April 10th, 2019

Hey mama,

100 EPISODES!!! Can you believe?

Today I am celebrating our 100th episode by walking you through a powerful exercise that will help you feel more connected to yourself and to your "WHY".

Why do you do what you do? Why do you bother to become a better woman, wife, and mother? Why do you wake up early every day? Why do you buy healthy food? Why do you plan your meals? Why do you want the kids to eat healthily? Why do you buy books, listen to podcasts? Why do you hire coaches and healers? Why?

If like me, you want to live a life full of meaning, intent, and passion, this is the place to start.

I highly recommend listening to this show with a pen and paper (preferably a journal) as you will want to record the insights that are coming up for you.

If you are a recovering pleaser and "good girl" like I am, this will be very helpful.

Your desires and cravings matter, let's start by finding what they are.

If you want to jump on a call with me, head on over to and book a call with me, I will hold you accountable to your desire.

Sending you much love & healing!

Women, Food And God by Geneen Roth [ep-99]

April 3rd, 2019

Hey mama,

Today on the show I share a beautiful piece from a book called Women, Food and God by Geneen Roth.

I think this book must be passed on from mother to daughter!

Every woman must read this book so that she establishes a healthy relationship with food and God.

You'll hear me read a story from one of her retreats and how women heal their life long battles with food, body image problems, insecurities, overeating, undereating, binging, using food as comfort, and other self-destructive patterns we all do.

What God has got to do with it? In short, everything. It will make more sense after you listen.

The road to healing is messy, however embracing the messiness in what you have to be willing to go through in order to get to where you want to go.

This work is hard and it requires time, but it is so worth it. This is your life's work!

There is no benefit to you or to your family in dwelling on or commiserating how bad your life is and how hard it is for you to step out and do something about it.

As far as I know, all that matters is your will. Everything else will unfold for you. Just trust the process.

I want to hear from you!

Do you resonate with Geneen's message? Find me over at IG and share your thoughts with me @healthbeginswithmom (if you're not on IG, you're welcome to email me

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

Sending you much love & healing ;)

How Being An Orthorexic Mom Wounded My Daughter (And How We’re Healing From It) [episode #98]

March 29th, 2019

Hey mama,

Today on the podcast I am sharing my journey recovering from orthorexia, how it interfered with my relationship with food, my marriage, parenting, social life and life in general.

I hear so many mothers who feel like they are "the food police" or "food Nazis" and that stands in the way of feeling good inside of their own homes. I know how that feels!

So let's talk about it.

Here's what we cover:

  • I explain what orthorexia is and how it is different than anorexia (both are eating disorders)
  • How to know if you have orthorexia (aka food puritan)?
  • My own journey of being orthorexia, and how this wounded my daughter and my relationship with my family
  • Our healing journey and how we have shifted since then.

If you are a mom who's feeling obsessed (or too controlling) of what her kids eat (or don't eat) you have got to listen to this episode!

I want you to know that you are not alone and you can get help!

The first step is to acknowledge you have this problem, start with listening to another mom sharing her experience (that would be me :)

I want to hear from you! In the comments, tell me how do you feel about feeding your kids? And How do you keep your sanity around healthy eating and living?

I hope this is helpful to you, and if it is please share it with a mom who needs to hear this.

Ladies, We Need To Stop Doing This! [ep-95]

March 6th, 2019

Hey mamas,

Today's podcast might sound like a rant or like I'm too intense, but I don't care.

We have to talk about this.

If I don't talk about this I am not being of service to you or more importantly to your kids.

So think of it this way, I do this for your kids who are watching you and deserve to have a mom who shows them how to choose herself always, who has a strong sense of self, who is centered, confident, educated and embodied.

Today's episode is all about the REAL reason why you might be feeling like crap.

The real reason you are burned out, stressed out, exhausted, unhealthy, not feeling vibrant and like you hate your life.

Are you ready to hear the truth? Click below to listen.

What are your takeaways from this episode? I'd love to hear your ideas and thoughts and also your limiting beliefs around your health. Tell me, why you can't take care of yourself. Share them with me over at Instagram @healthbeginswithmom

When Your Family Is Not On Board With Your Health Mission [ep-93]

February 20th, 2019

Hey mamas,

So you finally decided to eat healthier and started buying healthier food, move your body more, take supplements and try to go to bed earlier.

This, among other things, means minimizing junk foods, sweets, chips, and other unhealthy items.

What you didn't realize was the amount of resistance and 'retaliation' that is expected to come from your kids!

They are not on board and you may feel like getting healthy was a huge mistake in the first place!

Or what about your hubby who knows you are working on balancing your hormones but still stuffs the fridge with coke and junk food. It almost feels like he's doing this on purpose.

Today on the show I talk about how to handle resistance and pushback from your loved ones.

Girl, one thing I've learned from my health mission and guiding clients on theirs is that resistance will come and it will come BIG!

Pretending like it will not happen is a lie and unrealistic and is a huge energy leak for you.

Instead what you need to do is learn how to reframe it in your head and see how by you staying true to yourself you will inspire your loved ones to follow you instead of fight you!

Enjoy listening!!

Sending you much love & healing,

The Highest Compliment For a Woman is “Oh! You’ve lost weight!” (Or Is It?) [Ep-92]

February 6th, 2019

Hey mamas!

As women, one of our superpowers is to connect and relate to each other through the power of speech.

Today on the show I talk about how this superpower, used inappropriately (or even appropriately) can make someone feel small, unseen and insignificant and how we can turn this around simply by learning how to change our thinking and connect more with the heart.

At the end of the day, we all want to be seen and heard and show up in life more than just a body, per se.

It is absurd, in my opinion, that we see ourselves as a body when we are so much more than just a body. We're a soul residing in a body, we all have dreams, hopes, aspirations, desires, and a creative force that longs to be expressed.

How would the world look like if we've seen people beyond their physicality or body?

Is commenting someone about her weight (whether she's lost or gained weight) makes this world a better place? Are we lifting each other up or are we becoming shallower and more superficial as a society?

To help all of us rise more I have also shared a few scripts of really nice comments we can use instead. So next time you are in an awkward situation with a woman and you want to make her feel really good about herself, skip the small talk, skip talking about the weather and show her that you see her more than she sees herself.

As a mother who's raising daughters, I'd like to teach my girls to see people for who they are and not just their body as well as them hearing the same compliments in return. I begin with myself.

Can you relate to what I've shared today on the show? Connect with me on Instagram @healthbeginswithmom and let me know what you think!

On Air Coaching: When Overgiving Sucks The Joy, Happiness and Health Out Of You With Jessica

February 1st, 2019

Today on the show you will meet Jessica who is a wife and mama of three children. Jessica sought my help because she feels like she's struggling with managing her reactions to the kids and her husband and just in general not feeling supported or acknowledged by her family. As you will hear on the call, Jessica is very self-aware and understands that the source of this feeling is not prioritizing herself regularly and as the call progresses you will hear how together we make the connection between her health and menstrual cycle to why she feels the way she does.

As you listen, consider these questions:

  • Do you also feel like you have difficulty managing your reactions to your kids and their behaviors

  • Do you also feel like you'd like to be a nice and sweet mom but all you are preoccupied with is the logistics of how to make your house run smoother, kids to listen and comply with what you ask them to do, and just to have a sense that your house is a home and everyone who lives in it (including you) is enjoying the comfort and the good and positive atmosphere of it?
  • Do you feel like motherhood and raising a family is a job or duty and as a result, you tend to not prioritize connection with your husband?
  • Do you also feel like after having kids you and your partner are like "two passing ships" or roommates?
  • Do you also crave to feel more joy in your life?

On Air Coaching: Mother-Daughter Healing With Stephanie (ep-90)

January 24th, 2019

On today's On-Air Coaching call you'll meet Stephanie who feels like she is in between two important people in her life (her mom and her daughter) but she doesn't know how to navigate this struggle and how to show up as the mother she wants to be and guide her daughter through her challenges as a 10-year-old.

This was such an important coaching session as I know many of you are struggling with something similar so I hope this conversation will give you a lot of clarity and clues as to where to start to remedy this.

As you listen, consider these questions:

  • Do you feel like you are caught in between your daughter and your mother where your daughter is struggling with finding her voice and your mom is not familiar with personal development work? Like Stephanie said she feels like there's "a mess above me and a mess below me and I don't know how to position myself in this", in other words, she doesn't know how to play this role in a constructive way that doesn't bog her down and suck the life out of her.
  • You don't know how you can best guide your daughter?
  • You are coming from a home where there was a lot of co-dependency and enmeshment?
  • Growing up were you also not allowed to have feelings? Were you always shut down, yelled at, told that you were overly dramatic and to stop exaggerating and simply to be quiet and not interrupt?
  • Do you feel like this made you disconnected from yourself? Or from who you thought you were?
  • Are you driven for success, achievement, having more, doing more and feel like you're not praised and appreciated by your external world?
  • Growing up how did you learn to soothe your emotional pain?
  • Are you also into personal growth and do "all the things" right, but still feel like you don't know how to take care of yourself?

Keep all these questions in mind as you listen to my conversation with Stephanie.
