Using The Four Phases of Your Menstrual Cycle as a Healing & Self-Care Framework (with Dr. Alex Golden) [ep-150]

March 26th, 2020

I am so excited to introduce you to Dr. Alex Golden, the co-founder of Zesty Ginger. Together with her partner, Megan Blacksmith, they teach women how to live in alignment with the four phases of their menstrual cycle.

Dr. Alex Golden is known for her integrative MD approach to health through both functional and conventional medicine and for teaching women the tools they need to be their own health advocates.

You are going to LOVE this interview, we’ve cover so much important points you need to know about as a woman!

This episode is an absolute MUST listen!

I have learned so much from Dr. Golden, she’s incredibly wise and intelligent and her life’s journey is inspiring on so many levels. She and I both have a Russian background and we talk about that too, navigating the Russian mentality and culture, healing from the Soviet upbringing is not an easy task. The Soviet-style of parenting is ridden with shame, critic, structure and a distance between parent and child. This is not an easy beast to dismantle and heal from and we both are still working on that.

Highlights from today’s episode:

  • Alex’s story and journey from healing chronic pain all the way through her current work with women
  • The heartbreak of not having children, navigating a conversation with her husband, parents, in-laws and the pressure of that.
  • The curse of the good girl and grieving her so we can step into our best selves as women.
  • How Alex and Megan have discovered working with the four phases.
  • What makes the four phases work and the practice of trusting yourself as a woman.
  • The differentiation between owning your power as a woman and what you think you should be able to do compared to men.
  • Hormone balancing and working with the 4 phases of the menstrual cycle can be grouped into 2 overarching goals:
    1. Optimizing inflammatory cascades in the body (phases 1&2)
    2. Optimizing natural detoxification functions for a healthy metabolism and to properly process and remove hormones and hormone-mimicking substances (phases 3&4).
  • What to do if you don’t have a menstrual cycle?
  • What is behind the name zesty ginger?

Invest in Yourself! (ep-147)

March 5th, 2020

Invest in yourself! No one can do this for you!

I know your dirty little secret…

July 15th, 2019

Hey mama,

This weekend my 3-year-old drove us crazy.

She wanted to wear four layers of dresses one on top of the other.

This makes her feel beautiful.

What she doesn't understand is that it's too hot and wearing so many layers will make it worse.

She feels stuff but doesn't know yet how to express it.

So there was a lot of screaming and frantic behavior.

I was on the verge of losing my mind.

She was absolutely hysteric.

It was then that a lightbulb went off for me.

I remembered an article I've read a couple of weeks ago about women's health a hundred years ago and that helped me to calm down.

This will blow your mind!

Do you know the real meaning of the word 'hysteria'?

Ready for it?

In Latin, it's 'suffering in the uterus'.

You know what that means, right?

That being hysteric is a women's problem.

In other words, being born a woman is a curse.

You know this stigma right?

Men are not hysteric.

Men are perceived to be logical, rational, stable, linear, consistent.

Women, on the other hand, are hysteric.

It's almost like we are doomed to be anxious, illogical, inconsistent, and cray-cray just because we were born female.

I know your dirty little secret.

I know that you live your life on the cusp of losing control of:

your emotions,

your appetite,

your sexuality.

I know that sometimes, you're a hair-trigger away from exploding.

I know that deep inside you quietly believe that… well, you're too much.

I know that very often you feel like you’ve stepped inside the skin of a different person – that you are not being yourself.

I also know that you feel guilty and ashamed about it.

Very similarly to how my daughter felt.

I know that you're asking yourself:

'What's wrong with me?!'

"Why can't I get control of myself?'

I know because I'm a woman too.

I know how it feels to be a woman in a man's world.

To this day, women's health and pain are mostly not understood.

It's like trying to explain to my toddler that wearing four layers of puffy dresses one on top of the other is too hot.

She doesn't get it.

She doesn't care.

All she wants is to feel pretty.

This got me to think.

What if we're approaching women's health issues wrong?

* What if we are not giving women and girls the right tools to take care of themselves?

* What if instead of being logical and rational with my daughter I tried to think like her?

* What if I understood her emotionally instead of sending her the signal that she is hysteric?

So I did.

Wanna know what happened?

She burst in tears.

Gave me a huge hug.

And allowed me to take off the dresses.

She felt like mommy gets her.

What if we don't get ourselves?

What if our very own woman-ness is not yet understood?

What if this is the real reason for our struggles?

Struggles at home.

Struggles at work.

Struggles with relationships.

What would happen if you started understanding yourselves better?

How would this change your:

* health?

* work?

* parenting?

* marriage?

* sex life?

Think about this.

Why is it that to this day when a woman says how she feels, what she wants or what she needs, someone always knows better?

Her doctor, her mom/dad, her teacher, her husband...

What would happen if you've owned your woman-ness more?

How would your life look and feel like if you lived in alignment with your feminine current instead of against it?

What difference would this make to our daughters to think of themselves as 'normal' instead of 'hysteric'?

This is not wishful thinking.

This is possible.

This is the most sustainable way to live as a woman, wife, and mother.

I have been living in alignment with my feminine current for the past five years and I have personally coached dozens of women through the same process.

What's possible for you when you live in alignment with your feminine current?

* Life won't feel hard anymore.

* You won't be a victim of your body.

* You will be able to carve out time for yourself out of your busy day.

* You will have time for fun and play.

* You will feel more connected to your husband and kids.

Am I Depressed?

July 4th, 2019

Hey mama,

This week I got an email from a client and in it, she wrote:

'I get these spells of time and I question if I'm depressed.

Seemingly everything is OK.

I have a husband and a daughter. I'm not majorly ill, barely a sinus issue, I have a good life, I have an anniversary and a birthday this week, we're going out tonight and away for the weekend, but nothing really brings me joy right now.

I don't have to feel happiness 24/7 but I should feel something and I just feel numb right now.'

Are you familiar with this feeling?

I know I am.

More often than I would like I am flooded with low energy, feel very drained and tired.

I don't want to do anything - get ready, go out, be nice, smile or talk.

All the things that we have to do to 'show up' in our lives, right?

So what should you do?

How to shift this around?

This is what I cover in today's podcast episode (episode #110).

Hope this is helpful and if you resonated with my tips please share this episode with one mama in your life who needs to hear this right now.

It takes a village to raise a child AND a mama.

Do your part, show up for yourself and others.

Sending you much love and many blessings,

Hate Seeing Yourself In The Mirror? [ep-108]

June 19th, 2019

Hey mama,

Meet Linda.

A 42-year-old wife and mama to two beautiful girls.

An executive at a thriving start-up company.

She has everything she ever wanted. According to her parents she 'won' at life.

So why does she feel like crap?

She is confused.
She doesn't feel in control of her health.
She doesn't feel like she knows what she's doing.
She knows that she had neglected herself and her marriage.
She has zero interest in sex (her husband is pissed off about it).
She's afraid that she's screwing up her kids.
She's burnt out.
In other words, she is 'sucked dry'.

Linda also can't stand seeing herself in the mirror. She hates her body.
She wishes to be thinner and feels betrayed by her body.

One thing Linda is sure of is that she is DONE.

Done suffering.
Done struggling.
Done feeling stuck.
Done feeling like a victim.
Done complaining and bitching about how bad she feels.

Linda is ready and willing to listen.

She had heard me say that today's women suffer because of two factors that drag women down. Until she learns to set herself free from both of those things she will continue to suffer.

Wanna know what are those factors? Tune into today's podcast episode.

‘Self-care’ is not enough to fix how much moms are burnt out [ep-107]

June 12th, 2019

Hey mama,

Today on the show I talk about the one topic that is nagging at us, moms, like crazy. Constantly.

Wanna guess what that is?

Work-life balance.

Oh man. If I could get a dime for every time I've heard a mama complain about this I'd be rich by now.

On the one hand, we're bombarded with well-meaning advice about how to find balance as a mom.

On the other, you'll find experts, gurus, authors, creators, coaches, and others we look up to openly say that there is no such thing as balance. In other words, get used to living like a crazy person.

Hustle/chaos/insanity is a part of the deal. Embrace it.

I. Don't. Agree.

Curious why not? Check out today's podcast episode.

It might change how you view balance, hustle, ambition, and achievement and how to thrive as a woman in the midst of it all.

Do you agree? Disagree? I wanna know what you think, find me over at Instagram @healthbeginswithmom.

What Do You Wish For When You Blow Your Birthday Candles? [ep-105]

May 23rd, 2019

Hey love,

Today I have a challenge for you.

I want you to give yourself permission to dive deeper into yourself.

I want you to ask yourself, "what do I wish for when I blow out my birthday candles?"

In other words, what do I REALLY want?

Here are some examples from my clients (and some of my own):

"I wish I could eat whatever I could and still feel and look great"

"I wish I had more spaciousness and peace of mind in my life"

"I wish I didn't have to work so hard to lose the weight"

"I wish life was easier"

"I wish my husband desired me more"

"I want to have more fun"

"I wish I could dance again"

Now it's your turn. Go deep and don't hold back!

This is such an important piece when it comes to healing your relationship with your body, your health, your finances, your relationships with people, etc.

In order to truly heal yourself, you need to start with the truth and build up from there.

Choose yourself first, ALWAYS.

Because (and you already know this) you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Sending you much love & healing,

How Do You Mistreat Yourself? [ep-104]

May 16th, 2019

Hey love,

I hear from so many of you that you want to know more about me.

I love reading and whenever I pick up a new book the first thing I do is go straight to the acknowledgments portion because that's where I the 'real' person lives.

So I get it.

Today on the podcast I share more about myself, my journey and my health mission.

I talk about:

  • The various ways in which I see women mistreating themselves as women, wives, and mothers.
  • How my maternal lineage influenced me and why I didn't want my daughters to end up like them.
  • My motherhood journey and the healing I've experienced in that (still do).
  • My 'eat-pray-love' moment and what came out of that.
  • My mission as an embodiment coach for women.
  • My approach and how it looks like to work with me.

I hope you can find yourself in my story and know that you are not alone!

Whether you struggle with your relationships with people (parenting, marriage), your relationship with money (not clear what to do with your life/time, scarcity mindset, money wounds, etc), or with your relationship with your body and health, I want you to know that this can change.

All you need to do is decide.

Say "yes" to yourself.

Open your mind.

Slow down and listen.

Ask for help and wait.

It will happen.

Your feminine energy doesn't travel in the speed of Google. It needs time to simmer and cook before it manifests.

You got this!

If you're ready to say 'yes' to yourself (or willing to open your mind to it), head on over to my website and schedule a quick coffee chat with me.

I'm happy to hold space for you and help you create a plan of action in your way to change and heal from past conditioning and find the true you ;)

You're welcome.

“What If My Husband Would Want Time Off Too? I Can’t Handle The Kids All By Myself!” [ep-102]

May 2nd, 2019

Hey mama,

Today on the show I am doing a follow up from last episode (ep-101) where I talked about how to sleep in with a clean conscious and without responsibilities for just one day.

So many of you resonated with this message and I'm so glad!

One message I've received really touched my heart, so I am responding to it today:

Here's what one mama wrote:

"Thank you for the podcast! I understand you now! I will have to work on myself to get the guts to do something like that, or at the very least have a half day to myself. Confession, I know if I would do it, my husband will want to as well. Not sure I can handle the kids on my own for a full day and overnight. This is so shameful to admit, I can't believe I am telling you this."

Today's show is my response to her.

Enjoy listening and let me know if you have any questions related to this topic. If there's enough interest, I might do a series of Q&A.

Sending you much love & healing,

Women, Food And God by Geneen Roth [ep-99]

April 3rd, 2019

Hey mama,

Today on the show I share a beautiful piece from a book called Women, Food and God by Geneen Roth.

I think this book must be passed on from mother to daughter!

Every woman must read this book so that she establishes a healthy relationship with food and God.

You'll hear me read a story from one of her retreats and how women heal their life long battles with food, body image problems, insecurities, overeating, undereating, binging, using food as comfort, and other self-destructive patterns we all do.

What God has got to do with it? In short, everything. It will make more sense after you listen.

The road to healing is messy, however embracing the messiness in what you have to be willing to go through in order to get to where you want to go.

This work is hard and it requires time, but it is so worth it. This is your life's work!

There is no benefit to you or to your family in dwelling on or commiserating how bad your life is and how hard it is for you to step out and do something about it.

As far as I know, all that matters is your will. Everything else will unfold for you. Just trust the process.

I want to hear from you!

Do you resonate with Geneen's message? Find me over at IG and share your thoughts with me @healthbeginswithmom (if you're not on IG, you're welcome to email me

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

Sending you much love & healing ;)

How Being An Orthorexic Mom Wounded My Daughter (And How We’re Healing From It) [episode #98]

March 29th, 2019

Hey mama,

Today on the podcast I am sharing my journey recovering from orthorexia, how it interfered with my relationship with food, my marriage, parenting, social life and life in general.

I hear so many mothers who feel like they are "the food police" or "food Nazis" and that stands in the way of feeling good inside of their own homes. I know how that feels!

So let's talk about it.

Here's what we cover:

  • I explain what orthorexia is and how it is different than anorexia (both are eating disorders)
  • How to know if you have orthorexia (aka food puritan)?
  • My own journey of being orthorexia, and how this wounded my daughter and my relationship with my family
  • Our healing journey and how we have shifted since then.

If you are a mom who's feeling obsessed (or too controlling) of what her kids eat (or don't eat) you have got to listen to this episode!

I want you to know that you are not alone and you can get help!

The first step is to acknowledge you have this problem, start with listening to another mom sharing her experience (that would be me :)

I want to hear from you! In the comments, tell me how do you feel about feeding your kids? And How do you keep your sanity around healthy eating and living?

I hope this is helpful to you, and if it is please share it with a mom who needs to hear this.

Sending you much love & healing,

Women Who Run With The Wolves (ep-83)

November 21st, 2018

Hey Divas,

Today on the podcast we are talking about the wild woman archetype and what it means to be a Wild Woman?

I keep hearing experts, healers, coaches, podcasters use the term 'wild woman' and honestly, I never fully understood what they mean.

Wild - meaning crazy, out of control, insane, sent loose?

Not really.

Today on the show I will share a great book that illuminated my understanding of what it means to live your life to the wildest and how this very archetype is behind the health of our families, communities and the world at large.

It all begins with you claiming your power, your fire, your belief in yourself, courageously, unashamedly, unapologetically paving the way to live your most authentic self.

If you're into poetry, storytelling, myths, fairy tales and other forms of sharing ideas and complex psychological theories, this episode is for you!

Do you love reading? I'd love to know what you've been reading lately, please share below :)

Enjoy listening!!

p.s. Today on the podcast I also share a new and exciting segment that is coming up on the show! I will be doing On-Air-Coaching Calls which are pre-recorded coaching calls with listeners of the show! This is your opportunity to be coached for free on my show (anonymously of course). If you are interested, book your time slot here:
